Believe it or not, Groupon periodically offers superb deals on Newspaper Subscriptions! I myself have experienced the discount myself, and to-date, it's the best price for my local newspaper that I've received. The only thing is that these deals are not always available, so you need to search Groupon Local Deals for your newspaper periodically, and/or keep your eyes open if you receive the daily Groupon email. The best part about getting the Groupon Newspaper deal is that once that deal expired, I was able to convince my paper, purchasing direct, to continue to give me the Groupon price on my renewals. You can negotiate the same deal. Simply state that if they were making money at the Groupon price, then they can still make money by offering you the same deal directly.

Amazon may not be your first choice for newspapers, but they do offer a few Nationally-distributed newspapers, such as USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times - National Edition. They even have some other less popular newspapers.  

Purchasing Direct

Even when purchasing direct from the newspaper, you can negotiate a better rate than the full price. When they send renewals with a higher rate, I ALWAYS pick up the phone! You do not need to be a master negotiator to get a newspaper deal either. They do not want you to cancel your subscription, so they're usually willing to deal. There are a few ways that you can go about it:

1. Ask what the "New Subscriber" rate is for your area. This is always lower than full price, because they want the business of people that just moved to the area. You can still ask for this rate, even if you've lived there for 20 years, and/or you already subscribe to the paper.  
2. Ask if they're offering any "Specials" for the paper in your area.
3. If you're purchasing 10 or more papers each week, you can ask to speak to the Sales Manager for your local paper. Tell them that you're interested in getting a volume discount.
4. If, like me, you received a great discount from a place like Groupon or LivingSocial, ask if they can renew your subscription at the same rate. As you will see above, I did this, and I've been paying the discounted rate for years after I received the initial Groupon offer.

Whether they'll give you the discounted newspaper rate that you're asking for, sometimes comes down to who you're speaking with. If the person on the other end won't budge, thank them for their time, and hang up. Call back and you'll speak to someone else.
